Prof. CHAN Wing Wah is music educator, composer and conductor.  He was originally trained as a teacher in English, Chinese & Music at the Northcote College of Education. He later entered The Chinese University of HK and received his BA degree (major: Music, minor: German). While studying at CUHK, he also obtained AMusTCL, LMusTCL and FTCL from the Trinity College of Music, London.  He was then awarded a Canadian Commonwealth Scholarships for five years to finish his Master and Doctor of Music in Composition at the University of Toronto. He had also been awarded a stipend by the German Academic Exchange Service to attend the Darmstadt Summer Course for New Music in Germany.

Prof. Chan started to lecture in the Music Department at The Chinese University of Hong Kong from 1986 and became Professor of Music at 2001.  He had chaired the Music Department for over ten years and was also Associate Dean of the Arts Faculty. At one year he concurrently chaired and restructured the Department of Modern Languages & Intercultural Studies to become the  Department of Linguistics and Department of Cultural & Religious Studies.  He joined HKU SPACE in 2007 and retired as its Deputy Director (Arts & Sciences) in December, 2016.

As a composer, Prof. Chan has written over two hundred works including seven symphonies several of which are recorded with the label of Hugo Productions. Internationally he had received the first prize of the International Double Reed Society Composition Contest in USA and the Yoshiro Irino Memorial Award. His music has brought him to over 20 countries to perform and lecture. Locally he was presented the 1991 Composer of the Year Award by the Hong Kong Artists’ Guild and the 1992 Outstanding Young Person’s Award. His music had also won him the 1997 Most-Performed Local Serious Work and the 2004 Best Serious Music Composition, Golden Sail Award presented by the Composers & Authors Society of HK. He was the first Composer-in-Residence of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. His music had been performed in USA, Canada, Argentina, UK, France, Germany, Spain, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Romania, Poland, Hungary, Russia, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Thailand, Mainland China, Taiwan, Macau and Hong Kong.   He conducts regularly various performing groups and for over twenty years as Music Director of the HK Oratorio Society.

Prof. Chan had been appointed by the Government to serve as a Regional Councilor, advisor of LCSD, Finance Advisory Group member of the West Kowloon Cultural District, Chairman of the Jockey Club Music & Dance Fund among others.  He is now Chairman of the Composers & Authors Society of Hong Kong, HKCAAVQ Subject Expert, Vetting Panel member of CreateHK under the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau,  Council member of  the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and Advisor of Our HK Foundation.  He was appointed Justice of the Peace in 2000 by the Chief Executive of HKSAR.

Prof. Chan became Vice-President and Director of School of Management at the Centennial College in Feb., 2017. He is also Senior Advisor of HKU SPACE and Adjunct Professor of CUHK.
